A gear drive is built for power, efficiency, and long-term durability. But like any precision mechanical system, it performs best when it is properly maintained.

Regular lubrication and inspection help reduce gear wear, protect the bearings, and keep power delivery smooth and consistent. Proper maintenance is also one of the most important things you can do to extend the service life of your gearbox.

Whether you ride on pavement, rough roads, or off-road trails, taking a few minutes to check and maintain your gear drive can make a significant difference over time.

Why Gear Drive Maintenance Matters

Inside the gearbox, the gears are constantly working under high torque and load. Over time, grease can become contaminated, lose its effectiveness, or be displaced through extended use.

Dust, sand, moisture, and water can also accelerate wear if they enter the gearbox.

Regular maintenance helps:

• Reduce gear and bearing wear
• Maintain smooth and efficient power transmission
• Prevent abnormal gearbox noise
• Protect gears from premature damage
• Extend the service life of the gearbox
• Keep your board performing at its best

For riders who frequently ride in dusty, wet, sandy, or demanding environments, we recommend checking the gearbox more frequently.

Maintenance Notes

Every 5,000 km, replenish approximately 50% of the gearbox's initial grease volume.

After another 5,000 km, if the gearbox is operating normally and there are no abnormal noises or signs of damage, replenish the same amount again.

If you notice abnormal noise, excessive vibration, water contamination, emulsified grease, or signs of bearing corrosion, the gearbox should be inspected and may require a full rebuild.

During a rebuild, the gear teeth and internal components should be carefully inspected. If the gear teeth show only minor wear and the tooth surfaces remain intact, the gears may continue to be used.

Before starting any maintenance, make sure the electric skateboard is powered off and disconnected from the charger.

How to Apply Gear Grease

For basic grease maintenance, you will need:

• ACEDECK recommended gear grease
• Clean rag or paper towel
• L-Key
• T-Tool
• WD-40
• Nose Pliers (if necessary)
• Gloves

Step 1 — Remove the Wheel

Remove the axle nut and wheel using the T-Tool.

Step 2 —Remove the Gear Drive Cover

Use the L-Key to remove the screws securing the gear drive cover.

Step 3 — Remove the Gears

Carefully remove the gears from the gear drive. Use nose pliers if necessary to remove the gears.

Step 4 — Clean the Gear Drive

Thoroughly clean any metal shavings, and old grease from the gears and inside the gear drive enclosure.

Step 5 — Reinstall the Gears

Reinstall the gears in their correct positions.

Step 6 — Apply the Correct Amount of Grease

Prepare the grease tube and apply grease evenly between the gears.

Apply the recommended amount of grease evenly across the gear teeth.

Do not simply fill the gearbox with as much grease as possible. The correct amount is important for proper grease.

Step 7 — Add Additional Grease

Apply a small amount of additional grease to the sides of the gears.

Slowly rotate the gear by hand to distribute the grease across the tooth surfaces. Make sure the gears are adequately coated before closing the gearbox.

Close the gear drive cover. 

Step 8 — Inspect Before Closing & Reassemble

Check the gear teeth, bearings, seals, and surrounding components for unusual wear, corrosion, or damage. Install all screws, the adapter, and the wheel. Tighten everything securely.

If anything looks abnormal or you hear unusual noise during operation, stop riding and contact ACEDECK Customer Support.

Riding in Harsh Conditions?

If you regularly ride through:

• Sand
• Dust
• Mud
• Wet roads
• Rough off-road terrain

your gearbox may require more frequent inspection and maintenance.

Water and contamination are especially important to watch for. Even though the gearbox is designed to protect the drivetrain, prolonged exposure to moisture can eventually affect grease and internal components.

A little preventative maintenance is far better than waiting until a gearbox develops serious wear.

Lifetime Gearbox Warranty

At ACEDECK, we stand behind the durability of our gear drive systems.

ACEDECK provides a lifetime warranty on Gear Drive Box Components.

However, a lifetime warranty does not replace regular maintenance. Gearboxes still need to be properly lubricated and cared for throughout their service life. Normal wear, damage caused by neglect, lack of lubrication, or contamination from water and debris may not be covered under the warranty policy.

If your gearbox develops an unusual noise, abnormal vibration, leakage, or any other issue, don't keep riding and hope it goes away.
